1897 Sesame and Lilies: Three Lectures by John Ruskin – W.J. Gage & Company, Toronto A rare Canadian edition of Sesame and Lilies by John Ruskin, published in 1897 by W.J. Gage & Company. This edition features an ornate decorative design on the front panel, with gold gilt lettering on both the spine and front panel. Bound in green cloth, it is a pocket-sized volume with an elegant presentation. All 224 pages remain securely attached to the hinge. Some wear is present at the upper spine and foot edge of the spine (see photos in the gallery area for details), but the book retains its structural integrity. Sesame and Lilies is one of John Ruskin’s most famous works, consisting of three lectures delivered between 1864 and 1868. In these essays, Ruskin explores the power of literature and education, addressing the roles of men and women in society. He argues for the moral and intellectual influence of books, urging readers to approach literature with discernment and a deep sense of responsibility. The title itself reflects this theme — “sesame” symbolizing the gateway to knowledge, and “lilies” representing purity and virtue. John Ruskin (1819–1900) was a leading Victorian art critic, writer, and social thinker. His work influenced discussions on art, literature, and education, emphasizing the connection between beauty and moral development. Sesame and Lilies became one of his most widely read books, shaping perspectives on literature and learning well into the 20th century. A scarce and distinctive edition for any collector of John Ruskin’s works or 19th-century literature. The Canadian publication by W.J. Gage & Company adds to its appeal, as the firm was known for producing educational and literary works tailored for the Canadian market, making this edition an intriguing piece of publishing history.
