More than 200 photographs and advertisements capture ten decades of the city's life. Teams of oxen in the forest, women in calf-length bathing dresses, broken windows after a race riot, munition factory workers, quiet Sunday picnics, old cars - all these are the joy of a city discovering itself. As a counterpoint to the photographs the editors (all staff members of the Urban Reader, a bimonthly published by the city) have selected quotations from diaries and journals and excerpts form the newspapers of the day.
