This is an entry level position working with The Butchart Gardens fireworks team. Previous fireworks experience is helpful, but not necessary as all training will be provided. Good physical fitness is required as the job activities are repetitive in nature and require lifting strength. Individuals with repetitive strain or back injuries should not apply. Successful candidates will be expected to assist with any firework activities that fall under the jurisdiction of The Butchart Gardens and will be expected to work in conjunction with other Gardens’ staff. In the early season, work will primarily involve assembly and installation of existing firework mechanical structures as well as shell and candle holders. By the end of June, the work week will primarily be Wednesday through Sunday and will involve the preparation of the fireworks shows and fusing of product. Saturday evening work will be required. Please note that there is an element of risk in the handling and discharge of fireworks. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must be aware and prepared to work with this risk. Staff will be trained in proper procedure and safe handling of fireworks. Successful completion of the Natural Resources Canada Display Fireworks Safety course is mandatory. The successful candidate will be required to: • Assist with the weekly preparation, Saturday show set-up and performance, and removal of fireworks, props and other materials • Assist with construction and refurbishment of effects • Assist with the seasonal setup of the firework venue, and maintenance of venues and equipment • Assist with record keeping and reporting related to the fireworks show • Assist with fusing of pyrotechnic material • Assist with removal of debris and props from the fireworks field • Assist with the organization, maintenance and cleaning of work areas • Successfully complete the Natural Resources Canada Display Fireworks Safety Course The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications: • Show complete attention to detail and accuracy • Good safety record • Good physical condition and ability to do heavy lifting • Comfortable working at moderate heights • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions • Comfortable working over and near water • Flexibility in scheduling of hours • Valid BC Drivers License • Good communication skills – written and verbal • Excellent positive attitude and a genuine desire to be a team player • Strong mechanical aptitude • Strong problem solving abilities • Ability to operate hand tools and power tools • Excellent references This is a seasonal position, offering 40 hours of work per week from April 1st until Labour Day. Work through mid-September is also possible for those interested. Weekend and evening work will be required, along with occasional overtime. All necessary training will be provided after employment is confirmed. Starting from $26.36 per hour.
