Here is a significant piece of vintage, signed, Canadian pottery. Monolithic and heavy in form, it seems that the beauty of the piece is in its plain solidity. ....and yet, delicate shafts of wheatgrass, etched into the clay by the artist, encircle the form in a most gentle way. The stems on the front of the vase lead our eyes around to the flower seeds on the back. The Brutalist design heaviness is lightened by this tall grass swaying in an imaginary breeze. The piece, in effect, represents the great contrasts found in Nature. The top irregular edge is glazed and slightly rounded outwards at the corners. The unglazed sides are shaded browns, enhancing the natural colour of the fired clay ware. The implied organics in this weighty rectangular vessel offer much food for thought. Biographical information about the artist is scarce - my information leads to Czechoslovakian family roots. The artist now resides in Canada. The vase is in perfect condition. Measurements are 8.25" H X 3.5" W X 2.25" D. Please call 250 658-0587 to view.
