Genuine art deco era- vintage earrings that feature a sunset and palm tree design crafted from iridescent butterfly wings in a silver-tone setting, circa 1950. Black silhouettes of palm trees, mountains and shore heighten the colors. Butterfly wing jewelry was first exhibited at the 1924 Great Empire Exhibition by Thomas Mott of England. It catapulted the art of reverse painting on Butterfly Wing to a new fashionable craze of fun yet elegant jewelry. The wings aren't actually blue; they appear that way due to tiny scales that diffract light, creating the blue hue. When light hits the wings, they shift from blues to greens, making them absolutely gorgeous. Excellent condition. Measures: Approx. length: 1 1/2" (diameter: 5/8")
